The grading process uses publicly available data. Check the defence’s rushing TDs allowed per game and receiving TDs allowed per game separately. Compare each to the league average. A defence allowing 1.2 rushing TDs per game against a league average of 0.9 is meaningfully run-vulnerable. A defence allowing 1.5 receiving TDs per game against a league average of 1.1 is pass-vulnerable. These aren’t precise probabilities, but they give you a directional read on where the scoring opportunities are likeliest to appear.

Depth charts matter more than most bettors realise when assessing defensive vulnerability. A defence might rank well overall but have a glaring weakness at one position that a specific offensive player can exploit. If a team’s starting slot cornerback is average but their nickel package exposes a weak linebacker in coverage, the opposing slot receiver becomes a TD candidate even against a statistically strong defence. Dig one layer below the team-level numbers and look at which specific defenders will be on the field in red-zone packages — the individual matchup within the team matchup is often where the real edge hides.

A Weekly Matchup Review Process for TD Props

Matchup analysis sounds time-consuming, but the weekly process I use takes about thirty minutes on a Tuesday evening. The discipline is in making it routine, not in making it complex.

I start by pulling each game’s defensive matchup data: red-zone TD rate, rushing TDs allowed per game, and receiving TDs allowed per game. This gives me a quick snapshot of which games feature the softest defensive matchups. I flag any defence with a red-zone TD rate above 55% as a priority for further analysis.

Next, I cross-reference those soft matchups with the offensive players I’m already watching. If a running back I’ve been tracking for his goal-line usage faces a run-vulnerable defence, the matchup compounds his existing opportunity advantage. If a wide receiver I like faces a pass-vulnerable secondary, his TD probability gets a meaningful uplift. The best TD bets come from this intersection — a player with strong usage metrics facing a defence with a specific positional weakness that aligns with his scoring method.

The final step is checking for recent defensive changes that the season-long numbers might not reflect. A defence that allowed a high TD rate through twelve games might have made a personnel change in Week 13 that improved their red-zone performance. Conversely, a strong defence that lost a key player to injury in Week 14 might be more vulnerable than the season-long data suggests. These late-season adjustments require checking the last three weeks of defensive performance in addition to the full-season numbers.

The entire process — pulling data, cross-referencing, checking recent changes — fits into a single sitting with a spreadsheet and a few data sources. The output is a shortlist of three to five TD props where player opportunity and defensive vulnerability align, which forms the core of my weekly betting card.

Over time, the weekly matchup review also builds your defensive knowledge base. After a full season of grading defences every Tuesday, you develop an intuitive sense of which units are genuinely vulnerable and which are deceptively tough. This accumulated understanding doesn’t replace the weekly data check — you should always verify with current numbers — but it speeds up the process and helps you identify the most promising matchups before even opening the spreadsheet. The first season is the most labour-intensive; by year three, the entire process feels more like confirming what you already suspect than discovering it fresh each week.
